Sirti Digital Solutions: edge computing and intelligent networking, the right combination to face the future
20 April 2023
Luca Rubaga, Managing Director of Sirti Digital Solutions, describes the characteristics networks must have in order to provide intelligent support to this digital evolution. In this era of growing digitalisation, data and information are fundamental assets for business competitivity in every sector and in every dimension. Cloud computing has been one of the main enablers of this new scenario, taking on the role of a platform for the orchestration of all those elements that characterise the digital transformation, such as artificial intelligence, IoT, virtualisation or analytics. Data management – the acquisition, processing and use of data – is bringing out the edge as the new focal hub of digital infrastructures, and making it the focus of attention in a number of productive sectors, including Telco. Bringing technological innovation to the edge is an essential prerequisite for the development and enablement of new services with high added value, to improve competitive positioning. It is in this context that edge computing comes into play: an architectural approach that extends the cloud computing model, offering the possibility to process data as close as possible to where they are generated or used, with significant advantages for the user experience. This architectural approach, in a 5G network infrastructure environment, enables the development of business cases relating to new high-added-value services, thanks to the availability of low-latency access and transport, together with computational capacities close to data generation or use. The development of new services offers huge potential to create new business opportunities, while at the same time expanding the range of stakeholders involved. Intelligent networks based on automation In such a decentralised technological environment, with a constantly growing volume of data, the so-called “intelligent networks” are becoming essential to the effective orchestration of data, with a positive impact on business operations. This is where Intelligent Networking comes in: a model that moves beyond the traditional FCAPS (fault, configuration, accounting, performance, security) concept, orchestrating communication and services “intelligently”, in a virtualised context.Because this is an architectural solution with a strong element of automation, geared towards the development and/or evolution +of services, it is among the key objectives of the main service providers. Thanks to the growing complexity of telecommunication services, the Intelligent Networking concept has evolved further, starting out from software-defined network architectures and using a series of efficient osmosis processes to bring on board elements from other “universes”, such as software development, machine learning and artificial intelligence. This evolution has aided the development of new network management solutions that combine a high degree of flexibility with an impressive capacity to adapt to business needs that is less prone to human error. In short, an increasingly “intelligent”, properly orchestrated network ensures greater control, greater flexibility, a greater ability to adapt to new requirements, and a shorter time to market for the new services, without impacting information security levels.Among the main benefits of this evolution are undoubtedly a significant reduction in operating costs, and thus the optimisation of investments in hardware, also thanks to the virtualisation process, which enables the consolidation of network functions. In conclusion, this type of model offers a large number of opportunities from the point of view of both sustainability, by reducing energy and environmental impact, and social development, by offering and enabling employment opportunities. A “digital” masterclass to trainnew talents.
2 March 2023
Interview with Clemente Perrone - Chief People, Organization & Communication Officer of Sirti Group Il Sole 24 Ore Supplement 02/03/2023 FRANCESCO PRISCO ACADEMY 2023 p. 48 The continuing consolidation of Sirti Group’s role in the digital transformation market goes hand in hand with a structured training programme that moves in two directions: the bringing on board of new technological talents and professional retraining with a view to work in digital areas. With regard to the former, Sirti has created its own Digital Masterclass, an in-house Academy for the training of the professionals of the future in the field of IT, laying the foundations to follow the fast-paced evolution of technology. “These are specific training programmes aimed at bringing on board young resources with a diploma or degree, but without specific experience”, explained Clemente Perrone, Chief Human Resources ; Organization Officer of Sirti. “In 2022 alone, this project has allowed us to train 80 young people, who were given the opportunity to boost their basic knowledge of IT and to acquire more specific notions tailored to the needs of the company and the evolution of the main market trends”. The second aspect is focused on professional retraining programmes for figures who already have significant work experience. “Thanks to this project, linked to the New Competences Fund, we were able to fund over 250 professional retraining courses in 2022. Since 2021, we have delivered more than 600,000 hours of digital training, which has allowed us as a company to undertake an in-depth transformation of in-house skills, allowing us in turn to rise effectively to the challenges linked to the technological transformation of the company”, continued Perrone. Sirti is today an innovation hub in the development of network infrastructures and digital and cybersecurity services, playing a key role in the construction of what are known as "digital highways". This positioning allows the company to also adopt training as a driver for social inclusion, and in this context, Sirti is playing a key role in professional training programmes for prisoners, training them to become optical fibre installers and cable jointers and offering them skills they can also use upon their release to obtain gainful employment. «The Prison Work Programme, already developed in the Prisons of Lorusso and Cutugno in Turin and Rebibbia in Rome, and which has led to the employment of 10 prisoners, is an effective example of how crucial issues for the country, such as the lack of qualified labour and the necessary rehabilitation of prisoners, can be tackled using innovative tools, thanks to the collaboration between the Institutions and private enterprise”, commented Clemente Perrone. “This approach is closely aligned with our “hands-on” philosophy, which has been one of the strategic cornerstones of our work for over a hundred years”, the manager concluded.
